Kreft Films strives to honour those who deliver a compelling service, a great product, or those with attributes for a human-interest story that will inspire viewers.  This can take our lenses into a wide range of environments, from traditional boatbuilding yards to the top of the architecturally commended Lloyd’s of London building, fine dining on the deck of a 1930s schooner in Capri, to a private chef’s custom-made kitchen.

Brand editorial video

Client: Waterhaul

Director, camera operation, sound recordist, editor: Emily Harris

  • In 2022 Ocean Republic’s founder Rory Mckellar, who features in this production, began supplying recycled-plastic sunglasses brand Waterhaul with beach cleaning bags made from upcycled sail cloth, a collaboration Waterhaul wanted to communicate with their audience. At Waterhaul’s request, Rory – an experienced film director himself – recommended that Emily shoot an educational/editorial-style production for the brand.

Notable to this video production was the process of shooting and assembly-cutting the footage simultaneously and on location, instigated to increase efficiency in delivering a production on-point for the client in a very narrow timeframe. Waterhaul’s founder and CEO, Harry Dennis’ replied to the delivery of the first cut: “Blown away by this, you’ve done an incredible job! Thanks very much, really excited to launch this….”.

  • Director, camera operation, sound recordist, editor: Emily Harris.

We had a fantastic experience and end result working with Emily to produce a behind-the-scenes/short documentary-style video telling the story of Waterhaul’s sail upcycling project and collaboration with Ocean Republic. Emily spent time on location with us, helping to craft the video’s narrative, essentially acting as a shoot director, which kept the shoot so much more efficient and on point. Alongside this, Emily employed dynamic, on-location, rough cutting of footage to help us to achieve what I visualised.

We were also really impressed with how Emily was able to read and implement our brand style into both the shoot and the editing process to create a piece that perfectly portrayed Waterhaul’s values. The result really showcases our project and is an incredibly professional piece that we’re particularly proud of.

Artist’s profile film

Well, these two videos on [James] Dodds are important documents of both his work and viewpoint, but also vital documentation of his subject, boats. It matters not if they are working or pleasure craft. The beauty and art of creating a vessel to carry people upon the sea is sublime. So, once again, thank you for posting these videos.
— Youtube viewer comment
  • ‘Shaped By The Sea’ was produced to showcase artist James Dodds’ work internationally. In addition, it sought to bring to light his working practice, producing enigmatic paintings that celebrate the art of the traditional boat builder through the study of vernacular working boats of the British Isles. This was released as a two-part documentary on Youtube and Vimeo to maximise exposure for Messum’s, who sponsored the film and represent Dodds.

  • Director, camera, editor: Emily Harris. Sound recordist: Ben Bradley.

  • “Emily was a joy to work with, her understanding of all things maritime gave “Shaped by the Sea” a depth that I believe would not have been achieved by just a skilled film maker alone. The film masterfully connected my paintings with the subject matter and the environment common to both.”.

...Emily Harris has a real appreciation and eye for these boats – as a filmmaker she seems to capture the spirit and magic of each vessel which helps make her work honest and compelling. Emily worked hard to generate what we needed, editing remotely and always understanding the historical context of our yachts. Ultimately – she is a sailor, and in my view, this has helped her skill in filming on-the-water subjects…

  • Shot in Cornwall in December for Sandeman Yacht Company, we endured a bitter climate to wrap this up in one day. Embracing the challenging conditions that sea fog provides and using it to Emily’s advantage, she knew this would give the production a unique look. Particular attention went into finding a voiceover artist to deliver the correct tone and style of narration for a Christmas-time production release date.

...Absolutely blown away by this one, this is exactly the level that we want to be setting when it comes to our front-end content! It’s incredibly cinematic and feels more like a short film than a video, it is so nourishing watching it.

  • Vivo Life issued a brief to document international rugby player Anthony Mullally’s masterful breathwork and cold water immersion techniques and to communicate the benefits. This short was to become an editorial video for the cutting-edge, plant-based, vegan health and fitness supplement brand which Emily Harris co-directed on the north coast of Cornwall.

As the sole video camera operator, Emily used her Sony A7S III and prime lens collection, trailing rocks leading to a natural saltwater pool to capture documentary footage of Mullally’s process. Emily directed and recorded the voiceover, asking Anthony to repeat his breathwork under a duvet, aiming to immerse the viewer and heighten the production value.
